GEO vs ASO · AI search vs app store search
GEO vs ASO
GEO vs ASO, for app makers. ASO (app store optimization) gets your app ranked when someone searches the App Store or Google Play. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets it named when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Mode which app to get. They work on different moments of the same decision, and most apps need both.

Published by Agniverse GEO, the AI search lab at Agniverse for app makers. We sell GEO work and not ASO, so we have a stake in one side of this. That is why ASO gets its real wins below, and why we say plainly that most apps should fix the store listing first. Every rule quoted here comes from Apple, Google, OpenAI or Perplexity's own documentation.
ASO ranks your app inside the App Store and Google Play, using signals Apple and Google describe (text relevance, downloads, ratings and reviews). GEO gets your app named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features, which build answers from web search results. ASO wins the search inside the store. GEO wins the question asked before it. Do ASO first, then add GEO.
GEO vs ASO at a glance
The two side by side. Scroll the table sideways on mobile, or read the dimension-by-dimension breakdown below it.
| Compared on | GEO (AI search) | ASO (app stores) |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Getting your app named and cited in AI answers. Also called AEO or AI search optimization. | Ranking your app in store search and turning store visits into installs. |
| Where it shows up | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | The App Store and Google Play |
| What the platform says counts | OpenAI and Perplexity publish crawler rules, not ranking factors. Google says AI features need a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet, nothing extra. | Apple: text relevance (title, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behavior (downloads, ratings and reviews). Google Play: ratings, reviews, downloads and other factors. |
| What you edit | Your website, the third-party pages engines cite, robots.txt, and tool metadata if you ship a ChatGPT app | Your store listing: name, subtitle, the 100-character keyword field, description, category |
| Who owns the deciding page | Often someone else: a list article, a review site, a forum thread | You own the listing. Your users own the ratings. |
| How you measure it | Ask a fixed set of buyer prompts several times per engine and count mentions. Google Search Console adds a Generative AI performance report. | Keyword rank in store search, plus App Store Connect and Google Play Console data |
| Where the buyer is | Asking which app to get, often before opening a store | Already in the store, searching |
Reaching people ready to install
Where is the person when your app shows up?
An AI answer reaches people earlier, while they are still deciding what to get. A good answer names a few apps and says why. The install is still a store visit away.
Store search catches people at the moment they want an app, with the install button on the same screen. Apple says results depend on text relevance and on user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews.
WinnerASO. Nothing sits closer to the install than a store search result.
Getting onto the shortlist
Who decides which apps a buyer even considers?
Ask ChatGPT for the best budgeting app for couples and it names a handful. If you are not one of them, you are not on that buyer's list. That shortlist is what GEO works on.
Store search returns a ranked list too, but only once the buyer is in the store and only for words that match your listing.
WinnerGEO. When the shortlist gets written in an AI answer, GEO is the way onto it.
Matching specific needs
Can the channel connect a detailed question to your app?
An assistant reads your site, reviews and comparison pages, so it can match a long, specific question like an offline macro tracker with no subscription to the app that fits.
Apple caps the keyword field at 100 characters and tells you not to repeat words from your name, subtitle or category. A niche use case may never fit.
WinnerGEO. A keyword field cannot hold every way people describe a need. A web page can.
How clear the rules are
Does the platform tell you what counts?
OpenAI and Perplexity document their search crawlers and ask you to allow them. Neither publishes how an answer picks which app to name. Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond normal search eligibility.
Apple and Google both describe the factors in their own docs. Google Play keeps the exact weights private, but you know which levers exist.
WinnerASO. The stores tell you what counts. In GEO you work from crawler docs, one research paper and your own testing.
How much you control
Who owns the page that decides the outcome?
Much of what engines cite is not yours. It is list articles, review sites and forums. You can fix your own pages this week. Getting onto other people's pages takes outreach and time.
The listing text, category and keywords are yours to change. Ratings and downloads come from users, but you know where they live.
WinnerASO. You own the listing. In GEO, the deciding page often belongs to someone else.
Measuring progress
Can you tell whether the work moved anything?
AI answers change from one run to the next, so a single check proves little. You run the same prompts several times per engine and track how often you are named. Google's Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report.
Keyword rank and store console data give steady numbers you can check any day.
VerdictASO is easier to read today. GEO is measurable too, but only with repeated sampling.
Where GEO and ASO overlap
GEO and ASO are separate channels with some shared inputs. Work on these and both benefit.
One plain category sentence
Apple matches store search on your title, subtitle and primary category. An AI answer needs a sentence it can repeat about what your app is and who it is for. Write that sentence once and use it in both places.
Ratings and reviews
Apple and Google both name ratings and reviews as store search factors. Review sites can also be among the pages AI search reads, since ChatGPT search and Google's AI features build answers from search results.
Your listing is a web page
Your App Store and Google Play listings are public web pages. A clear listing gives search engines, and the AI answers built on them, one more accurate source about your app.
Which should you do first?
For most apps the answer is both, in order. These are the signs that tell you where you are.
Start with ASO if
- Your store listing has never been worked on.
- Most of your installs come from people searching inside the store.
- You can only fund one channel this quarter.
Add GEO when
- Buyers in your category ask assistants which app to get.
- You keep losing to the same competitors in list articles and reviews.
- Your app solves a specific need a keyword field cannot describe.
- Your store listing basics are already done.
Both? They work on different moments. ASO wins the search inside the store, and GEO wins the question asked before it. Get the listing right first, then add GEO, and reuse the same plain category sentence in both.
How we compared them
We compared what each platform says in its own documentation: Apple's App Store search page and Google Play's discovery help for ASO, and OpenAI's crawler docs, Perplexity's crawler docs and Google's AI features guide for GEO. Where a platform publishes no rule, we say so instead of guessing. The winners per dimension are our judgment, and we sell GEO, so read the ASO wins as the ones we could not argue away.
